Financial Literacy Education from an Early Age to Enhance Financial Independence of Adolescents in an Orphanage

Abstract

Financial literacy among adolescents in Indonesia remains low, particularly among vulnerable groups such as teenagers living in orphanages who generally lack structured guidance on personal financial management. This community service program aimed to strengthen financial literacy and foster early saving awareness among the adolescents of Panti Asuhan Nur Karomah, Depok. The activity involved lectures, interactive discussion, and a savings simulation game for participants aged 13–18. Results showed a marked increase in participants’ understanding of the concepts of income, expenditure, and saving, as reflected in the improvement of post-test scores compared to pre-test scores, along with high enthusiasm and active participation throughout the session. The program concludes that structured and participatory financial education can effectively build early saving habits among adolescents in orphanage settings and recommends that such programs be replicated periodically and integrated into the institution’s regular coaching activities.
